Winter Droving & Ullswater Droving

2012 - Current

Ullswater Droving

Turn back your clock four centuries

Fire, Music, Masks and Mayhem in Pooley Bridge & Penrith Town Centre.

We are crowdfunding to create a new people's lantern for Winter Droving 2020, which will take place on Saturday 24th October 2020. Some of our animal lanterns are getting quite elderly, some are 9 years old! We need your support to create a brand new lantern or lanterns to make 2020's procession the best yet.

The two day festival encourages visitors to dress up and 'join the herd' by donning a mask, dressing up as a farmer and enjoying the entertainment.

The Ullswater Droving marks the beginning of the two days of droving celebrations and will take place on Friday 25th October with a special torchlight procession through Pooley Bridge led this year by The Baghdaddies.

On Sat 26th October 2019 Penrith will be transformed with its busiest market of the year, bustling streets, roaming street performances around every corner (in 2019 including KAMCHÀTKA, who have come all the way from Spain) and top quality local, regional and national musical acts across 6 stages. This all leads up to the highlight of the day - a magical fire and lantern procession throughout the town, where thousands of people line the streets to watch the spectacle, finishing with our headline act, KOG and the Zongo Brigade on the main stage.

Created by Eden Arts, The Winter Droving has become one of Cumbria’s iconic cultural events seeing 20k+ attend annually. Now in its 8th year, the event has grown exponentially with audiences making the journey from all corners of the UK.

The Ullswater Droving is back! This magical event marks the beginning of the two days of droving celebrations and will take place on Friday 25th October with a special torchlight procession through Pooley Bridge.

This year The Baghdaddies’ will arrive by Ullswater Steamers to Pooley Bridge at around 6pm where an awaiting torchlight welcoming party will greet them.

Kamchatka, described as near perfect street theatre, from Catalonia will be performing from 5pm in the village centre.

The Baghdaddies' exuberant and rampant brand of world music is an exhilarating cocktail of Balkan melodies, ska and latin grooves and sizzling brass played with furious energy and theatrical humour, making them as unforgettable on stage as they are when performing as wandering brass troubadours. They take themselves incredibly seriously so you don’t have to…

The Baghdaddies will then lead the torch light procession through Pooley Bridge to the field behind the Sun Inn, for a final performance on stage and a warm by the bonfire.

The Market - Tasty hot and cold food to eat and take away plus gifts...

You will be able to tuck into a wonderful Christmas taster menu from 1863 Bistro, mulled wine mince pies, pre-packed hampers, cheese and chutneys from Booths. Granny Dowbenkins will be offering up hot sticky toffee pudding and custard, jacket potatoes and soup and Pooley Bridge Village Stores will be serving hot waffles and gelato and light up toys, plus the Candy Bar, serving all manner of sugary delights!

There is free parking at Parkfoot Camping and Caravan site. For SAT NAV’s the postcode is CA10 2NA but you may need to add Howtown into address, this will bring you straight to the car park. It is just under 1km walk from the car park to the village centre along public footpath along lake shore. Please bring a torch as there is no street lighting along this path.

Please note that the bridge to Pooley Bridge via A592 is closed. To get to the car park you must go via Eamont Bridge and Tirril, following the diversion signs.

There is very limited parking in the village, please use the free parking at Parkfoot Camping and Caravanning site. Please be considerate in regard to where you park (e.g. avoid parking on verges as this will clog up the small village lanes and make it difficult to leave).

For accessibility info and accessible parking please click here to read the access statement.

Rolling Road Closure
: B5320 between Pooley Bridge Jetty and the Sun Inn will be closed between approximately 5:30pm and 6:30pm
